Pupil well being – 10 minutes a day self time.

We are all so busy.

We all have an excuse for not looking after ourselves. Yet our health is our wealth and if we do not look after all aspects of our health including our mental health we will not perform at our best or live life to the fullest.

Our pupils are the same. They have many pressures in life. Peer pressure, relationship or friendship issues, body image, self-esteem concerns and exam pressures to name a few.

I am a Year 11 form tutor and it is at this time of the year I find that pupils start to crumble under the pressures of life. So I have been reflecting on how I can help the to reduce anxieties or stresses that inevitably arise. I have decided to try and introduce the concept of encouraging my pupils to take ten minutes a day out to totally focus on themselves; the concept of self time.

This is important as it will help them process any underlying emotions that need to be processed to reduce stress and anxiety and it will also give them a break to recharge and move forward. We all need a little self time to function at our best.

I am planning to use this acronym to introduce it as an idea.


S  it in silence.

at a piece of food in a mindful way and savour the tastes and flavours.

L  earn to self soothe ( e.g. take a hot bath, stroke a pet, listen to a calming song, sing).

F  ind an enjoyable hobby.


T  urn off your phone.

I  magine that you can achieve your goals.

M  editate.

E  xercise.
